  To George J. Sligh, Jr.
   The Newberry Pistol Club will establish a perpetual memorial trophy in honor of the late George J. Sligh, Jr., who for many years served as the club’s president.  Sligh, who  died at age 58 at his  home August 26, was known as an ardent    out-doorsman,  sportsman and conservationist, and  because of  his special interest in muzzleloading shooting, the Newberry Pistol Club will inaugurate “The George  Sligh Memorial” event as part of  the Kings Mountain State Park MuzzleLoaders’ Conclave.  The conclave will be held  in conjunction with the two-day Pioneer Days program at Kings Mountain State Park  September 25-26. 
  Sligh, a member of the Piedmont  Muzzleloaders and a life member of  the  National Rifle Association, helped promote muzzle loading and saw it  reach the prominent position it holds in this area today.		  He was judged to be one of the best blackpowder  shooters in  the Southeast.  The  names  of  the winners of “The George Sligh Memorial ” will be engraved  on the perpetual trophy, which will be  on display at the  Newberry Pistol Club’s range.  Winners will be awarded smaller likenesses.
   Proceeds from "The George Sligh Memorial”  shoot will be donated to the Cancer Society, and  all muzzleloading hobbyists are urged to honor a great  sportsman  by  taking  part in the event.  Awards  will be presented the afternoon of  Sept. 26  for 29 different blackpowder events.  George J. Sligh, Jr. was a  Newberry native,  the son of  Mrs. Susie Maude Wilson Sligh of Newberry and the late George J. Sligh,  Sr. 
   He was  a  graduate of the 1946 class of Newberry College and was a veteran of the U. S. Army/ 		 Air Corp.,  having served in World War II. 
  At  the  time of his death, he was a building contractor, a  member of  Central  United Methodist Church, Gilder Creek  Hunting Club, Amity   Lodge No. 87 and   Friendly Fire Department.  He  was  married to Elizabeth  Ray O’Dell Sligh of  Newberry and was  the father of  three daughters, Karey Judith, Melinda Sue, and George-Jinna.

Sligh Memorial Trophy Awarded
   From among the 694 entries at  the recent Kings Mountain Muzzle Loaders’ Conclave, George MacDonald from  Simpsonville, became the first winner of the "George Sligh Perpetual Memorial Trophy. 
   Shooting a  black powder pistol  and a flintlock rifle, MacDonald’s combined score for the two-gun event topped all of the entries to win first place honors. 
  The George Sligh Memorial Trophy, donated by the 		 Newberry  Pistol Club, was presented to MacDonald by the late George Sligh’s three daughters, Karey Judith,   Melinda  Sue, and George-Jinna. 
   The two day black powder shoot got underway with the largest turnout in its six year history. However, the second day of the shoot  was hampered by a steady downpour of rain.  In spite of this, many  competitors managed to “keep their  powder dry” and continue the		 competition. 
   Donations  from the Memorial were sent to the Cancer Fund. 
   The Newberry  Pistol  Club plans to make this event  a  regular feature of  the Kings Mountain MuzzleLoaders Conclave in future years. 
   The Newberry Pistol Club  was  honored  at the Conclave by the presentation of a fine etching, a gift presented by Mrs. Elizabeth  Ray O’Dell Sligh, wife of the late Mr. George Sligh.
